    Reset your classroom community. Start with the Growth Mindset student survey. Students learn the difference between a Growth Mindset and a Fixed Mindset. Then they try to apply what they learned as they solve differentiated puzzles.

    Do you need to get your class back into "work mode" after Spring Break / March Break?

    Problem #1: Students don't try, especially when things don't work right away. They give up.

    Problem #2: Students don't do the right thing or stand up for each other. Being part of a classroom means being an active citizen. We don't always agree, but it's important to speak up.

    Problem #3: Students don't know how to work in groups. Collaboration is not the same as teamwork. One person doing all of the work is not collaboration.

    Problem #4: Students are mean, especially when they're upset. Good communication isn't just about presentations. It's also about getting your point across when both sides are upset, and things matter!

    Problem #5: Students wait for someone else to solve their problems. Creativity is about connecting ideas in new ways. When you are faced with a tricky problem, we use creativity to create a solution. Creativity is a skill we can learn.

    Problem #6: Students believe rumors, gossip, and viral posts. They don't think for themselves.

    KEEPING IT REAL - Content Warning:

    Everyone teaches in a different classroom reality. We have different student populations, teaching styles, and comfort zones.

    Please take note of the following information. This way, you can make an informed decision about how to handle the following two videos in your classroom.

    They are examples of real-world character building, but not all teachers may feel comfortable using them.

    Diversity Opportunity: 

    Sometimes, we have stereotypes about people who are in low socio-economic classes. The Rock breaks those stereotypes by working harder than everyone else until he succeeds.

    Language Warning:

    • 9:09 you’re gonna get your ass kicked; we’re gonna get the s* kicked out of us.
    • 11:49 get your ass kicked

    Content Warning:

    • Her girlfriend was killed (in a car accident) and she passed by the scene (unaware.) 
    • She talks about how she realized she had purpose when kids who almost committed suicide but didn’t wrote to her.

    Question: Did you screen the video with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson? Are you aware there's swearing / cussing?

    • Yes, I did screen the video. Yes, I am aware of the swearing. For this reason, I suggest watching the 8 minutes from 8:40 to 16:48. Even then, the Rock cusses at 9:09 and 11:49, hence the language warning in the lesson plan.

    • I think there's value in analyzing what the Rock has gone through to look for lessons about perseverance. But I recognize that not all teachers are comfortable with cussing.

    • The language warning has been in the lesson plan since the product was first published.

    • With the July 27, 2022 update, I included the lesson plan in the Section B PREVIEW PDF - this way teachers can see the entire lesson before buying.

    • On Aug 26, 2022, I put a language warning on the slides themselves so it's more obvious to teachers. I also added information about the language warning at the top of the product description and bottom of the product description. In the Preview video and Preview PDF, I added a red "content warning" bubble to draw attention to the language warning.

    Question: Can you make a copy of the video and edit out the swearing?

    • Unfortunately no, it's not my video. I am not the owner of the YouTube video. I do not own the copyright to the content in the video. We are using it under Fair Use doctrine (student research, education.)

    Question: But other people copy and repost content all the time.

    • Just because someone does something on the internet (or anywhere else,) doesn't mean they're allowed to.

    • I am not a lawyer. I would have to consult an Intellectual Property Lawyer to find out what I can and cannot do. Even then, I may have to spend legal fees to defend my use.

    • Cool fact: Sometimes, you see someone else content that is "obviously" not theirs. Only the copyright owner can force YouTube to take down the video. Sometimes, the copyright owner chooses to leave the video up because they make money from the ads on that video (Source.)

    Question: Can you find a different video of the Rock - one without swearing?

    • I used to have a different YouTube video of The Rock, but that one is no longer available.

    • I tried finding a motivational version of the Rock's story where he doesn't swear. I'm still trying. The Rock swears.

    • If you happen to find a good video that talks about getting evicted, working harder than anyone else in the room, and how he only had a few dollars in his pocket, I'd love to see it. Please email me at Mike@educircles.org
