What educators are saying

Used this activity with my elective students who work in teams the entire semester to help them distinguish between collaboration and cooperative teams. I plan to use this with all of my science classes next year to help them prepare before getting into lab work or projects.
Great resource! My middle school students struggle with working together in our STREAM class so I started the year with this. It's a lot of material so I cut down a lot of it but I have a lot to work with so that is good!

Need a fresh start for your classroom to re-energize your students?

Train your students how to work in groups using these fun teamwork learning skills lessons.

Collaboration and Teamwork are NOT the same!

    • Your students may be working in groups, but that doesn’t mean they’re working well.

    • These teamwork activities and lessons teach students about three different teamwork styles: collaboration, coordination, and cooperation.

    • New Unit, New HABITS! Use these teamwork activities before your next unit to reset classroom expectations!

    Teacher Feedback:

"This really helped my kids understand what Collaboration is, as well as, introduce group work into our lesson and how it is successfully done."

    — Kaycee G. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

What does True Collaboration in Group Work look like instead of students just “working” in a group?

    SECTION A - Word Jumble

    • LESSON 1: Introduce the concept of collaboration, practice solving word jumbles, explore the concept of teamwork, and try 5 new strategies.

    • LESSON 2: Review strategies, create word jumbles, and reflect on how we worked with others.

    SECTION B - Teamwork Styles

    • LESSON 3: "Collaboration is not the same as teamwork" Four corners activity, brainstorm examples of teams and groups, then analyze nine photos of teams.

    • LESSON 4: Learn 3 ways teams can work: collaboration, coordination, cooperation. Reflect on our own teamwork in the word jumble. Apply our understanding by analyzing YouTube video (Minecraft / LDShadowLady) to determine if this is cooperation, coordination, and collaboration.

    • LESSON 5: Do a gallery walk to analyze the nine photos of teams. Use criteria to determine which teamwork style is used. Analyze more YouTube videos (Scenes from "Big Hero Six" and a scene from "Toy Story 2") to determine teamwork style.

    SECTION C - Teamwork - Video Analysis

    • LESSON 6: Review teamwork strategies and styles. Analyze teamwork styles in YouTube video clips from "Big Bang Theory" and "Oceans 11".

SECTION D - Consolidation / Demonstration of Learning

    • LESSON 7: Consolidate learning. Use critical thinking to come up with criteria to identify what Collaboration is and isn't.

    • LESSON 8: Collaboration Self Reflection and optional review test.

    • It is a low-resolution version of the entire PDF resource.

Collaboration is about working together to produce or create something.

Teamwork is a bigger umbrella term that includes three different styles: collaboration, cooperation, and coordination.

    • The slideshow lesson includes examples of collaboration to help your students see the difference between just co-operating, or coordinating others, and real collaboration.

    • The teamwork styles handout is DIFFERENTIATED for different abilities in your class.

    Teamwork could be

    1. COLLABORATION

    • A group of students is working on an assignment.
    • They’re all contributing to the discussion as equals.
    • Finally, they have a collective aha moment and figure out something they didn’t realize before.

    2. CO-OPERATION

    • A group of students is working on homework questions together.
    • They’re sharing information with each other.
    • But, they each are working on their own separate goals (get their work done.)

    3. CO-ORDINATION

    • A group of students is working on questions
    • The kids who are stronger tell the kids who are struggling what to do or write down on the assignment page.
    • Someone takes on more of a leadership role and tells others what to do.

❤️ Need to address some classroom issues?

Do you find students don't know how to work in groups? Collaboration is not the same as teamwork. One person doing all of the work is not collaboration.

    • The best time to use this resource to train your students was at the start of the school year.

    • The second best time is right now.

    • If we want students to improve, we need to train them. This 6Cs resource can help.

Real World Social-Emotional Learning that isn't babyish!

    • In my grade 8 class, we explored the 6Cs and social-emotional learning skills.

    • These skills didn't just help my students - they helped me rewrite my life story. They turned the hardest time of my life into something positive.

    • I've used my professional experience as a teacher and my own lived experience with tough times to create these lessons.

    ..... Mar 18, 2024 Update:

Do you need to get your class back into "work mode" after Spring Break / March Break?

Problem #1: Students don't try, especially when things don't work right away. They give up.

Problem #2: Students don't do the right thing or stand up for each other. Being part of a classroom means being an active citizen. We don't always agree, but it's important to speak up.

Problem #3: Students don't know how to work in groups. Collaboration is not the same as teamwork. One person doing all of the work is not collaboration.

Problem #4: Students are mean, especially when they're upset. Good communication isn't just about presentations. It's also about getting your point across when both sides are upset, and things matter!

Problem #5: Students wait for someone else to solve their problems. Creativity is about connecting ideas in new ways. When you are faced with a tricky problem, we use creativity to create a solution. Creativity is a skill we can learn.

Problem #6: Students believe rumors, gossip, and viral posts. They don't think for themselves.

Problem #7: ALL OF THE ABOVE
