What educators are saying

These are great. I use them with my students who struggle with reading. The passages are great as reading interventions.
I really love having specific readings already chosen and ready to go. I have used this to help a rising 9th grader learn about metacognition and how to approach different texts while thinking about how he is thinking. Great resource!

    • Asking Questions - PRO TIP 1:
Don’t ask a question you already know the answer to.

    • Asking Questions - PRO TIP 2:
Try to answer your own question. Use evidence from the text.

    • Asking Questions - PRO TIP 3:
Ask lots of questions. Include higher-order thinking questions (why or how / would or might)

    • Asking Questions - PRO TIP 4:
Stop after every heading or paragraph and ask a question.

    • Making Connections - PRO TIP 2:
Avoid simple connections. Find things that are same-same but different.

    • Making Connections - PRO TIP 3:
Use one of these thought patterns: “This is like that, but… so…” or “A is like B, and B is _ so A is probably _”

    • Making Connections - PRO TIP 4:
Stop after every heading or paragraph and make a connection

"This is a fantastic resource that is well prepared and ready for online learning. Thank you so much!"

How to infer - 4 PRO TIPS:

    • Inferring - PRO TIP 1:
Figure out what the text is really saying even though it doesn’t say it like this. (Evidence from the Text + Your Thinking = an Inference)

    • Inferring - PRO TIP 2:
Your inference cannot be directly in the text. It has to be something new that you figured out based on the text.

    • Inferring - PRO TIP 3:
Use Somebody Wanted But So to think about the text and make inferences.

    • Inferring - PRO TIP 4:
Use It says, I say, And so to explain your inference.

    • Repairing Comprehension - PRO TIP 2:
Does your SAY SOMETHING make sense with stuff you know about the world? If not, re-read the paragraph. Use PEEP to clarify your thinking.

    • Repairing Comprehension - PRO TIP 3:
Does your SAY SOMETHING make sense with stuff you already read in this text? If not, re-read the paragraph. Re-read the other stuff you already read.Use PEEP to figure out why it doesn’t make sense.

    • Repairing Comprehension - PRO TIP 4:
Use PEEP: Point, Evidence, Explanation, Point

    "These were great! Very rigorous!"

    — ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Lynn F. (used with 7th grade)

    Reading Comprehension Strategy #5. Evaluating

    • Evaluating - PRO TIP 1:
      Restate part of a sentence from the text as a question that includes… a modal verb (Should… Could … Would… …might…) or a value word (better/worst, more/less, etc…)

    • Evaluating - PRO TIP 2:
Clarify the criteria for evaluating. Define the underlying concept word. Make a checklist. Narrow down the list. Identify deal breakers.

    • Evaluating - PRO TIP 3:
Play with the words to find other ideas. Ask a similar question, opposite question, or simpler question.

    • Evaluating - PRO TIP 4:
Start with the other side. Try to be open-minded. How might the other side be correct?

"I really love having specific readings already chosen and ready to go. I have used this to help a rising 9th grader learn about metacognition and how to approach different texts while thinking about how he is thinking. Great resource!"

    — ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Stefani C. (used with 8th grade)

Reading Comprehension Strategy #6. Finding the Main Idea

How to EVALUATE and FIND THE BEST MAIN IDEA - 4 PRO TIPS:

    • Finding the Main Idea - PRO TIP 1:
Focus on the BIG PICTURE (the entire article). Summarize the entire article in a word or phrase. What general point is the author trying to make?

    • Finding the Main Idea - PRO TIP 2:
Look for clues in key spots. (How is the text organized?)

    • Finding the Main Idea - PRO TIP 3:
Think about each paragraph. What is this paragraph about? (Where is the main idea in the paragraph? Beginning? Middle? End?) What role does this paragraph play?

    • Finding the Main Idea - PRO TIP 4:
Find the “best” main idea. The main idea is NOT always directly stated. The best idea has strong support from the beginning, middle, and end of the entire article.

"This is a great resource for struggling students."

    — ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Malia F. (used with 9th, 10th grades)

(I also changed the order of the products in the bundle to move the "Active Reading Strategies powerup" to the top. It's a great resource that can 10x student engagement and participation compared to a classroom where each student takes a turn reading the text, and everyone listens.)

JULY 4, 2022 UPDATE: This product is MUCH easier to use! I'm currently updating all of the products into my "Single PDF File" format! When you download the BUNDLE, you will get a zip folder containing a single PDF file for each reading strategy lesson or article.

    ..... Mar 18, 2024 Update:

Do you need to get your class back into "work mode" after Spring Break / March Break?

Problem #1: Students don't try, especially when things don't work right away. They give up.

Problem #2: Students don't do the right thing or stand up for each other. Being part of a classroom means being an active citizen. We don't always agree, but it's important to speak up.

Problem #3: Students don't know how to work in groups. Collaboration is not the same as teamwork. One person doing all of the work is not collaboration.

Problem #4: Students are mean, especially when they're upset. Good communication isn't just about presentations. It's also about getting your point across when both sides are upset, and things matter!

Problem #5: Students wait for someone else to solve their problems. Creativity is about connecting ideas in new ways. When you are faced with a tricky problem, we use creativity to create a solution. Creativity is a skill we can learn.

Problem #6: Students believe rumors, gossip, and viral posts. They don't think for themselves.

Problem #7: ALL OF THE ABOVE
