SEOT is a way to think about how to achieve your goals. It’s an acronym. It stands for Strategies, Effort, Optimize, and Tinker.

MEASURE PROGRESS

SEOT Steps to Success #003

There is an idea floating around today that you can become an expert if you put in 10 thousand hours of work. Ten thousand hours is an oversimplification, but it makes intuitive sense: The more you do something, the better you get.

The idea comes from a study in 1993 that interviewed violin players at an internationally recognized music school. The study found that both good musicians and the best musicians practiced around 10 thousand hours before they were even 18 years old.

Sometimes, we don’t achieve our goals because we’re simply not doing the work. On the other hand, the opposite can also be true. There are times when we can put an incredible amount of effort into something, and we still don’t get the results we want.

Have you ever heard the phrase, work smarter, not harder? It means working hard isn’t always enough.

SEOT Step to Success #3 is to Measure Progress

Find something you can count or measure to see how much you’re improving. If the numbers aren’t going in the right direction, we need to ask ourselves what we could do differently?

Measuring progress is different from keeping track of the number of days you work on a goal. Keeping track of your goal streak is about effort – it’s a trick we use to help us put in the time (instead of just forgetting about our goal and playing on our phones.) But remember, just because you’re working on your goal doesn’t mean that you’re working towards your goal. Does that make sense?

Imagine my goal is to visit my family who lives in a different city. I can get in my car, drive all day in the wrong direction, and still not end up at my family’s house. In this example, counting the number of hours spent driving doesn’t necessarily track my progress towards my goal. (I mean, it usually does if I’m driving on a road that leads me to my destination. But when we’re working on goals, it’s not always obvious if we’re on the right track and doing the right stuff.)

If my goal was to drive to a different city, I could keep track of the number of kilometers from my current location to my final destination instead of counting the number of hours on the road. If the distance gets smaller, it means I’m probably getting closer to my goal.

Take a moment to think about your goal. What could you measure to see if you’re making real progress? What might you be measuring that doesn’t tell you if you’re getting closer to your goal?

Should you keep track of the marks on your tests or how quickly you finish them? Which matters more: The number of followers you have on Instagram or the quality of engagement? It all depends on what your goal is. If you’re trying to impress your friends, then buying followers might be the way to go. If you want sponsorship, companies like influencers who connect with real people.

Try it now! What can you measure that tells you if you’re on the right track to your goal? Good luck!

Discussion Questions

  1. According to this article, what are some obstacles that stop people from achieving their goals?
  2. Why do you think those obstacles stop people from achieving their goals?
  3. How might this strategy help people to achieve their goals?
  4. Why might this strategy not help people to achieve their goals?

TAKE ACTION: Think about a goal that you want to achieve.  What could you measure to see if you’re making progress? What number do you need to reach in order to have a little celebration?
