$50 September Goal Setting Class Party Video Showdown Contest!
Hey Middle School Teachers,
I need your help.
I used to teach Grade 8 in Ottawa, Canada.
Life happened, and now I create SEL and ELA resources for middle school teachers.
The problem: I haven’t been in a classroom for 7 years, so I don’t know what feels “cool” or relevant anymore.
I made two lessons I would teach today. Could you watch them with your class and tell me which one lands better—and why?
- Letter to Students Video (8 minutes)
- Prove Yourself – Lyric Song Video (4 minutes)
I’m giving away a class party!
Engage your students with an inspiring back-to-school activity and win a $50 e-gift card for a class party.
Show two motivational videos to your class, spark a discussion about which one they liked better, and you could win a $50 “Class Party Choice” e-gift card (your choice of Amazon, local grocery, or prepaid card, in $CAD or $USD) – no purchase necessary!
Video 1: Letter
Video 2: Song
How to Participate
- Watch Two Short Videos with Your Class: Play the following videos for your Grade 5–10 students:
- Video 1: Will You Be Average? – A witty, thought-provoking “letter to students” about goal-setting and not settling for mediocrity
- Video 2: Prove Yourself – An original rap-style motivational song about growth mindset and resilience, packed with humor and honest life advice
- Discuss & Compare: Ask your students which video is better and why. Encourage them to share which video resonated more and what lessons or inspiration they took from each.
- Email Mike: Email [email protected] (using your school email) to enter the giveaway. You’ll need to provide:
- Your Name and School: (For verification that you’re a current teacher – your school must have a public website listing you as a staff member.)
- Grade Level(s) Taught: (Only grades 5–10 are eligible for this contest.)
- Student Feedback: A brief summary of which video your class preferred and a few reasons why (as described by your students).
- That’s It – You’re Entered! One entry per teacher. Entries are accepted from now until September 30, 2025. The winner will be chosen in a random draw after the contest closes.
Prize
- Grand Prize: One winner will receive a $50 Class Party Choice e-Gift Card. The winner can choose an e-gift card valued at $50 CAD (if in Canada) or $50 USD (if in the U.S.) to one of the following:
- A local grocery store (for a pizza or ice cream party, etc.)
- Amazon (.ca or .com)
- A prepaid Visa or MasterCard
- Prize Delivery: The e-gift card prize will be delivered via email. No shipping required – you’ll get it online and can spend it on your class party needs right away.
- No Purchase Necessary: Purchasing any supplemental materials or products will NOT increase your chances of winning.

Optional Classroom Resources
(Not required for contest entry, but great for extended learning!)
If you enjoyed the videos and want to delve deeper into goal-setting and SEL (Social-Emotional Learning) with your students, check out these resources:
- Back to School 2025 Goal Setting Activities (SEL): A reading & writing activity that starts with a witty letter to get your students debating about being “average”. Perfect for the first week of school.
- “Prove Yourself” Song Lyric Coloring Pages: A set of growth mindset coloring pages and reflection prompts built around the Prove Yourself song. Students can color, reflect, and discuss themes of resilience and self-improvement.
These materials are available on TeachersPayTeachers and complement the videos, but they are completely optional. You do not have to purchase anything to use the videos or enter the contest.
